Funkybooks is a boutique Australian publisher of high quality Australian rhyming picture books, written by Chris Collin. Chris’ books are designed with one thing in mind – to encourage kids and adults to read for the joy of reading through fun and funky books!
Chris’ latest book Funky Chicken: Chooks in Space has won the 2016 Speech Pathology Australia Book of the Year Award! It is an honour to have one of our beautiful books recognized in this fashion by Speech Pathology Australia!
Here’s the review by the speech pathologists about why this fun and funky space voyage won Book of the year in the age 5 to 8 category.
A fantastically fun, funky book! This absurd tale will engage adults and children alike with characters that are wonderfully silly and appealing. The rhyming format encourages children to develop chronological awareness, and the planet names require non-word decoding. Underlying this fun story is the issue of ‘what makes a good place to live; which can be the starting point for further discussion with young readers. The strong narrative also brings along themes of identity and belonging, and about having ambition and chasing your dreams. Colourful illustrations support and extend the text, and end page illustrations provide further opportunities for prediction and discussion. – Speech Pathology Australia, 2016 SPA Book of the Year
A Bug Called Doug has been long-listed for the 2015-2016 ISLN (International School Library Network) Red Dot Awards. These are a readers choice award which makes it extra special!
